1. Why are we moving?
Write down the business reasons first, such as simpler processes, better reporting or a supported platform for the next several years. Clear goals make every later decision easier, from scope to timeline.
2. Which migration approach fits us?
There are three common approaches. A new implementation starts fresh and redesigns processes. A system conversion moves your existing system and data forward. A selective data transition mixes the two. The right choice depends on how much you want to change and how clean your current system is.
3. How good is our data?
Old, duplicate or incomplete records move into the new system unless someone cleans them first. Review master data early and decide what to archive, fix or leave behind.
4. What happens to our custom code?
Custom programs and reports built over the years may not work the same way on S/4HANA. List what you have, remove what nobody uses and plan to adjust what you keep.
5. How will we test it?
Testing is where many projects gain or lose time. Agree which business processes must be tested end to end, who signs them off, and how much testing can be automated.
6. Are our people ready?
New screens and processes change how teams work every day. Plan training, communication and support for go-live so users feel confident from the first week.
