Contract-to-Hire vs Permanent Hiring: Which Fits Your Team?

Both models bring good people into your team. The right one depends on how certain you are about the role, the budget and the timeline.

How each model works

Permanent hiring means the person joins your company as an employee from day one. Contract-to-hire means they start on a contract for a set period, and both sides can then decide whether to move to a permanent role.

When permanent hiring makes sense

  • The role is core to your business and will clearly be needed long term.
  • You want someone who builds knowledge of your company over many years.
  • Your team has the time to run a full hiring and onboarding process.

When contract-to-hire makes sense

  • You want to see the person at work before committing to a permanent role.
  • The budget or the scope of the role is not yet fixed.
  • You need someone to start quickly and decide on the long term later.

Things to think about with either model

  • Clarity: agree the role, expectations and review points in writing at the start.
  • Fairness to the candidate: explain clearly what the path to a permanent role looks like.
  • Compliance: contracts, payroll and background checks must follow the rules where the person works.
